Tandems East is a specialty tandem bicycle retailer in Pittsgrove, New Jersey. Begun in 1988 by Mel Kornbluh and his wife Barbara, calling Tandems East a bicycle shop is a limiting term. It’s more an emporium for all things tandem: bicycles, parts, handbuilt wheels, car racks and travel cases. Mel and Barbara clearly want you to catch tandem fever, and to that end they lead tandem tours all over the world, including a planned journey to New Zealand in late 2017/early 2018.
Tandems are often the domain of custom builders, since couples who ride tandems are rarely the same size, and they often have different bike fit needs. But being able to test ride and inspect at close range a tandem that you’ll likely be spending 5-10K or more on is an important feature that few shops can offer. Through its singular focus on tandems, Tandems East has 90 different models of tandems from 13 manufacturers in stock and ready to test ride. And who knows, you may get lucky and find one in stock that fits both of you perfectly (floor models are usually sold at a nice discount).
For those of us who require a special order, Tandems East works with Bike Friday, Bilenky, Calfee, Cannondale, Co-Motion, da Vinci, Hokitika, KHS, Kidz Tandem, Rans and Seven Cycles. Among this portfolio of builders you can find stock and custom options at a variety of prices. Whether you place an order, or roll out of the shop with your dream tandem, Mel and Barbara are your trusted guides with excellent advice and service, and they are committed to helping you with all aspects of the tandem bicycle experience.
Wheels are key components on any bicycle, but they have long been critically important for tandems, with the extra weight and stresses that two riders place on both wheels. Mel Kornbluh builds tandem wheels by hand, and has the first-hand knowledge and expertise that few other mainstream bike shops possess.
For parent and child tandem teams, Mel invented child conversion crank shorteners for children ages 7 to 11 or 12, and Ride2Child kiddie crank converters for children 3 ½ to 7 years old. These modifications allow parents to use a single tandem and crankset, by providing a number of different positions to mount pedals as the child’s legs grow.
The Kornbluhs know about the learning curve and investment of resources it takes to become a tandem rider, and they want to make sure that you have group ride opportunities and events that support your new commitment to riding as a pair. To this end, they promote rides and tours such as Tandem Sunday and Tandem Weekend close to their central New Jersey base, and offer trips for tandem riders to more far-flung and exotic locales.
With 189,000 experienced tandem miles in the saddle together, Mel and Barbara are your trusted concierges to the world of tandem cycling, and prove that the couples who pedal together stay together.
