How Team Rwanda Inspired a Culture of Cycling and Raised the Profile of African Cycling

Presented by Kimberly Coats

In 2006, when Jonathan "Jock" Boyer founded Team Rwanda, Rwanda had a zero presence on the Africa Tour. Rwanda did not show up with points on the UCI Africa Tour until 2009. A decade later Rwanda is 3rd in U23 and 4th in Elite in the Africa Tour. Countries such as Eritrea have also vaulted to the top of the rankings and countries such as Ethiopia and Kenya also now make up the rankings of the Africa Tour. The rise of a small country less than 20 years post genocide, in the cycling world, has inspired other countries to field cyclists and invest in the sport. From 15 countries with points in 2009 to 22 in 2017, the growth of cycling has been spurred by the growth of Team Rwanda.
